Keeping Our Animal Friends at Heart

Myths and Facts about Spay/Neuter The single most important thing we can do for our companion animals is to SPAY/NEUTER! Thousands of unwanted dogs and cats are euthanized daily because too many are being born.

Do Animals Have Souls? A mind-bending journey into the deeper dimensions of animal consciousness.

Ten things to know about puppy mills:

1.) Definition of a puppy mill is anyone breeding for profit. Another name for a puppy mills is “commercial breeder
2.) In order to make a profit, breeders need to have a lot of dogs and breed them as often as possible. That's why it is common for commercial breeders to keep 500 to over 1,000 dogs. Standard practice is to keep dogs in cages for their entire lives.
3.) Pet stores get their dogs exclusively from USDA-licensed commercial breeders.
4.) Yes, that means that
puppies in stores come from puppy mills!
5.) While over 4 million animals are euthanized in shelters every year, puppy mills churn out an estimated 500,000 puppies a year.
6.) Buying puppies from a pet store encourages puppy mills to breed more dogs.
7.) Puppy millers often set up fancy websites —
NEVER — buy a pet unless you visit where it was raised and see its parents.
8.) Selling puppies makes millions of dollars for breeders, pet registries (AKC), transporters and pet shops. Meanwhile, their breeding “stock”
lives a life of misery in a cage until their reproductive organs give out, then they are killed, abandoned or dumped at a shelter.
9.) Keeping dogs in these conditions is entirely legal, supported by the USDA, American Kennel Club, and state laws.
Usually kept in spaces the size of a bathtub with no veterinarian care, forced to endure the winter with no heat, the summer with no air, no exercise or socialization, not so much a pat on the head or toy to chew on. Older dogs that are rescued from these mills are so traumatized, it can take months for them to trust people.
10.) The best way to fight puppy mills is to never, ever buy a dog from a pet store or website, and to tell others to do the same.

Whether it's overuse of resources, water or air pollution, or soil erosion, raising animals for food is wreaking havoc on the Earth. In fact, raising animals for food requires more water than all other uses of water combined, causes more water pollution than any other activity, and is responsible for 85 percent of U.S. soil erosion. America's meat addiction is steadily poisoning and depleting our land, water, and air. Today's factory farms leave behind an environmental toll that generations to come will be forced to pay, not to mention the gross inhumane practices and overwhelming suffering of animals. Whether it's excessive water use or waste contamination, excessive soil use or erosion, excessive resource use or air pollution, America's meat addiction is steadily poisoning and depleting our water, land, and air. THIS IS THE TRUTH! Don't believe it? Do a search! Did you know that if we just cut America's meat consumtion by half we could feed the world easily?

What Dogs Need to Be Happy
By Sherry Woodard

Most dogs are loving, intelligent, and loyal. They want nothing more than to be members of a family, part of the pack. They give unconditional love, but they need love, attention, and kindness in return. In this fast-paced world, we all have so much to do that a dog’s needs can be easily forgotten. Some dog owners may not even realize how much attention a dog needs for him or her to live a happy life. This story illustrates how this “benign neglect” can happen:

Cowboy’s Story

Cowboy is a Border collie mix. When he was brought home as a puppy from a local shelter, his adoptive family thought the world of him. The boys spent hours playing in the yard with Cowboy, and every night he climbed into bed with one of the kids. In the beginning, it seemed like there wasn't enough of Cowboy to go around – he was very much a part of the family.

Slowly, however, things began to change. As Cowboy grew into an adult dog, he started losing his puppy charm. continued...

Jerom was one of a kind – not only was he the youngest chimpanzee ever infected with HIV (at 2 years, 8 months) at Yerkes National Primate Research Center (Yerkes), but he is also the only chimpanzee to die from an AIDS-related illness in 2005. BUT no chimpanzee - including Jerom or Tom - has ever died of the same form of the disease we call AIDS. Sign the petition to End Research on Chimpanzees

"How can we condem these animals that know words and sign language to life in a cage of fecal matter and wet cement with no toys, blankets or socialization? Let alone the indignacy and excrutionating pain and stress of experimentation. Lord, God what have we become?" Please help stop this tragedy by clicking the picture.

NO MORE HOMELESS PETS!

Remember to spay or neuter puppies and kittens by their second shots! In recent years, the United States has seen a dramatic reduction in the number of dogs and cats being destroyed in shelters --- from 17 million in 1987 to under 5 million a year currently. It is working!!

no more homeless pets!

All creatures are created from the same paternal heartbeat of God. Not to hurt our humble brethren is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission -to be of service to them wherever they require it. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men - St. Francis of Assisi

-------- Seven Steps to a Happier Pet --------

  1. Make sure your pet wears an identification tag to enable him/her to be returned to you if lost. WHY? (sad story)
  2. To prevent animal behavioral problems, make sure you enroll your new puppy or dog in behavioral training classes and visit petsforlife. Puppy classes are SO MUCH FUN, a great way to get to know your pet and maybe share a couple hours with your spouse, kids or friends!
  3. Animal behavioral problems can be health related. Make sure your pet has a complete medical exam by a veterinarian at least once a year. Like us, they need regular checkups!
  4. Prepare for disasters. Make sure you have a plan for your pet in the event of a hurricane, tornado, fire or flood. Hurricane Katrina left thousands of pets homeless and stranded, victims wished they would have taken time to plan for their pets in this disaster.
  5. Learn how to avoid dog bites, and how to prevent your dog from biting, by going to nodogbites, you'll be glad you did!
  6. Have a heart, be smart and make sure your pet is spayed or neutered. MILLIONS of unwanted pets are put to death each year, we can make a difference by being responsible pet owners.
  7. Plan for your pets's future in case something happens to you and visit petsinwills for more information.
